Tees Trains CIC
Tees Trains CIC is being established as a new kind of train operating company(TOC).Unlike many of the current TOC franchise holders which
are owned and operated by corporations and multi-national joint venture vehicles, Tees Trains is being formed AS A NOT-FOR-PROFIT
COMMUNITY INTEREST COMPAN Y(CIC) to take advantage of the opening- up of the rail network to ‘open access’ operators.
✤Tees Trains’ operating ethos is to provide a high quality passenger rail
service to the communities of East Durham and Teesside where current
and previous operators have been unable or unwilling to do so.
Operating as a social enterprise, Tees Trains’ raison d’etre is to re-invest
all profits into the company in order to further improve services or
maintain fares at the lowest possible level so that the services remain
financially accessible to as wide a cross-section of the community as
possible.
To this end, it is proposed that several identified groups will be eligible
for discounted travel (up to 25% off normal fares).These groups include
✤ young people up to the age of 25,
✤ national concessionary travel pass holders
✤ key workers such as NHS and emergency services personnel as well as
✤Local authority- employed teaching and classroom support staff
Tees Trains CIC will also work in partnership with local government,
private sector employers and further / higher education providers to
determine whether any concessionary travel schemes can be established
to help meet organisations’ sustainable travel plan goals.
It is envisaged that new TT employees such as station staff and train crew
will be employed directly from within the local communities served by
Tees Trains services.
